Study Disputes Claims That Preferentially Admitted Students Catch Up

A new study of Duke University undergraduates has found that those who are black or the children of alumni are disproportionately likely to switch from tough majors to easier ones, a move that creates the impression that the students are improving academically when, in fact, they are simply being held to less stringent grading standards….
